| Permanent REC New Orleans opens

The US Coast Guard's New Orleans Regional Exam Center is scheduled to reopen today in its first permanent home since Hurricane Katrina. The new location is in Mandeville LA, north of Lake Pontchartrain.
Since Hurricane Katrina flooded the New Orleans East REC facility in 2005, the REC has worked from temporary locations in Morgan City LA, Houston, Memphis and finally in Metairie LA. The Metairie location, in a trailer adjacent to the relatively new Coast Guard base on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, closed last week so that staff could begin the moving process. According to an 8th District Coast Guard press release, hours of operation at the new facility are 0730-1530 Monday through Thursday, and 0730-1315 on Friday. Limited services are available during lunch hour. The latest times to start a new exam are 1430 Monday through Thursday, and 1200 on Friday.
