Historic Waterways
C&O Canal National Historic Park
This place is awesome. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal is a beautiul and fascinating place to take a walk. Really neat old locks and aqueducts! The canal operated from 1828 to 1924, primarily hauling coal from western Maryland to the port of Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
Dismal Swamp Canal
The oldest continually operating man-made canal in the United States, and now part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Included in the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Civil Engineering Landmark.
Erie Canal
America's most famous canal; information from the history department at the University of Rochester.
New York State Canals
Official web site of the New York State Canal System, published by the New York State Canal Corporation. Canal-related activities and events, boating information and history of the canal system.
Ohio's Historic Canals

Kiel Canal
Ship channel in northern Germany connecting the Baltic and North Seas.
Rhein-Main-Donau-Kanal
Pros and cons of, and other information about, the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal. The new waterway crosses Europe, facilitating barge traffic from Rotterdam to the Black Sea. This site was put together as an on-line science project by a high school class in Germany in 1996. The canal has since been completed. (Web site in German and English.)
