Your boss's unions!
Marine employers on the U.S. inland waterways are quick to say that mariners should not organize -- not for collective bargaining, not for any purpose. The company, they say, should be like a family. Why bring some "outside organization" in to divide management and labor?
Well hold on, Cap. Your boss has his own unions. He or she might not call them unions, but they're organizations dedicated to furthering companies' interests. These interests often include preventing employees from having too much power.
Here are some links to marine industry organizations:
American Waterways Operators
The inland and coastal tug/towboat/barge industry association. During the 1998 Pilots Agree uprising, the AWO was referred to as "the companies' union."
Greater New Orleans Barge Fleeting Association
GNOBFA sponsors an annual River & Marine Industry Seminar. The topics would scare you.
Maritime Cabotage Task Force
A coalition of companies working to preserve cabotage laws, otherwise known as the Jones Act.
Maritime Navigation & Safety Association
MNSA purports to address safety concerns on the Lower Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to the Gulf of Mexico.
Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Council
A new site with information about development opportunities, as well as some history of the waterway.
